The world of industrial coatings is vast, with many different compounds to get to know. Take a look at some of the most commonly used industrial coating components and compounds and their purpose. 

Polytetrafluoroethylene - Polytetrafluoroethylene is an all-synthetic type of fluoropolymer. One of the most recognized brands of polytetrafluoroethylene is Teflon, which can be found as a finish on everything from household objects to automotive components. Polytetrafluoroethylene has several important advantages to offer as an industrial coating. For one, the material is absolutely resilient to heat. It can withstand high temperatures without breaking down. Secondly, polytetrafluoroethylene is non-stick, resilient to moisture, and highly durable. You can apply this fluoropolymer to an item and it will instantly become more resilient to moisture, corrosion, heat, and other threats. 

Polyurethane - Polyurethane is one of the thinnest industrial coating compounds. Its primary purpose is to act as a surface-level protectant. However, polyurethane also offers a high-gloss finish, which helps with the aesthetic value of some finishes. Polyurethane is created out of polymers that are resilient to heat, so it does not melt away easily. You can find polyurethane finishes added either all alone or in combination with other polymers to create a more comprehensive finish that is as protective as possible. For instance, polyurethane may be applied over a painted surface for a higher level of protection from the elements. 

Xylan - Xylan is another popular fluoropolymer type of industrial coating that shows up a lot in many manufacturing processes. Xylan is designed to primarily reduce friction, which makes it a good component to use on moving parts. However, this industrial coating is also great for protecting metal from corrosion. Therefore, it is commonly used to protect things like screws and fasteners. One of the biggest differences between xylan and something like polytetrafluoroethylene is that the xylan is usually applied in a really thin coat. The coat is so thin that it is often referred to as a film application. This is advantageous in some applications because the xylan will not change the shape, size, or threading of an object to a degree that would change its function.
