How To Pick The Perfect Decorative Rocks

Posted on

If you want to spruce up your yard, then you have quite a few options. If you are specifically interested in decorative rocks, then there is still a wide variety that you will need to consider. To help you out, here is an overview of some of the most popular types of decorative rocks and the advantages of each:

Size

Before going any further, you will want to decide exactly what kind of size you are looking for. Do you want very small rocks, such as gravel or pebbles? Or do you want larger rocks that might serve as centerpieces, or even stepping stones?

If you want smaller rocks, then you have three main choices:

  1. River Rock - In general, river rock will have the most variety in color and shape. As the name suggests, these rocks were either found in rivers or were made to emulate such rocks. They tend to be very smooth and rounded, with very diverse patterns. If you want a type of rock that you can walk barefoot on, then river rock is a very good option.
  2. Volcanic Rock - Volcanic rock tends to be very red and not particularly smooth (imagine a brick that has been broken into smaller fragments). Depending on the aesthetic you are going for, volcanic red rocks might be the perfect complement. On the other hand, they can clash strongly with some color schemes.
  3. Crushed Rock - Finally, you have crushed rock, which more or less resembles jagged river rock. If you like the color of river rock, but want a slightly more rugged texture, then crushed rock is a good choice. In some cases, you might also be able to find crushed rock cheaper than river or volcanic rock.

On the other hand, if you are interested in bigger rocks for your yard, then you have huge number of options. Since there are so many different types to choose from, it can be easier to consider your exact goal in using large decorative rocks.

Do you want to create a boundary?

A series of decorative rocks can create an aesthetically-pleasing boundary between two separate areas of your yard. Although they won't form an impermeable border, they are easy to place and maintain.

Do you want to enhance the appearance of plants?

Placing some large decorative rocks among your foliage can accentuate the beauty of your plants. Contact a company like Hastie's Capitol Sand & Gravel Co for more information.
